Facts and Thoughts about the Reason for, Theory behind and further Explanation on the Project
What Is Reality?
Like every philosophical problem, this one can have a multitude of solutions depending on how you define the word ‘reality’ and all the other words used in this post.
In the following, I attempt to break down a few of these different notions.
(But who am I to claim a definition? God? Kant?)
/rɪˈalɪti/
1 The state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic ornotional idea of them.
1.1 A thing that is actually experienced or seen, especially when this isunpleasant.
1.2 A thing that exists in fact, having previously only existed in one’s mind.
1.3 The quality of being lifelike.
1.4 Relating to reality TV.
2 The state or quality of having existence or substance.
2.1 Existence that is absolute, self-sufficient, or objective, and notsubject to human decisions or conventions. (1)
a reality as a social construct
Compared to the reality of everyday life, other realities appear as finite provinces of meaning, enclaves within the paramount reality marked by circumscribed meanings and modes of experience. (2)
Reality is intersubjective and purely based on an individual’s perception. Mass hallucinations can make multiple people share a personal reality. Reality I can be enriched by structural skeletons of ideas and concepts, their meaning provided by society.
b reality vs. dimension
ARTS AND SCIENCES
The structure of the ‘real’ went from a philosophical and theological question to a geometrical proposition. (3)
While philosophers and proto-scientists were cautiously challenging Aristotelian precepts about space, artists cut a radical swathe through this intellectual territory by appealing to the senses. In a very literal fashion, perspectival representation was a form of virtual reality that, liketoday’s VR games, aimed to give viewers the illusion that they had been transported into geometrically coherent and psychologically convincing other worlds. (4)
The idea of multiple realities constructed like parallel dimensions has been widely used in science-fiction.
A similar and just as popular trope is the literary world’s take on spacetime portraying alternate timelines like versions of a reality – given that they play by the same set of rules and their coming into existence is only triggered by someone’s decision or action, based on chaos theory’s butterfly effect.
Multiple Realities
There are different religious, philosophical and metaphysical concepts acknowledging the possible existence of multiple realities.
Some say, every human being creates its own reality.
Some say, different realities exist completely separate from the others, while some say they exist within each other.
Few accept the idea of a transition between different realities to be possible.
Some prefer the description of multiple layers within or several individual subjective perspectives on or perceptions of one single reality.
In spite of research being plenty, scientific consensus regarding the topic of multiple realities is rare, for it is a question of definition and therefore mostly a philosophical problem (as we remember).
The Transition
Given the existence of multiple realities or layers of one ultimate reality, the question of whether and if yes, how a transition is possible becomes immediately apparent.
There are different categories of a transition to be differentiated between:
ψ transitioning of matteror energy
ψ transitioning of a living organism (or life itself)
ψ transitioning of an idea / a piece of mind / a hyperobject
Reality I – The One In Which We Create
According to my map of the different realities, Reality I is the one located in the centre. This is due to the fact that we as humans tend to accept only what is now tangible and observable as truly real.
It is the reality we exist, think, act and interact in, which is why it is commonly referred to as ‘the reality’.
Reality I contains the following, ‘fictional’ realities (n-realities), because we create them using RI as a starting point to base our creations on.
To understand the dimensions of Reality I, we must ask ourselves:
ψ what is substance, energy, matter of Reality I in other realities?
ψ what are thoughts and ideas of Reality I in other realities?
God's Reality (Reality 0.X) –The One In Which We Are Created
the one, in which:
? everything we tend to accept as 'real' is created
? we are created
? our ability to create is created
? our creativity is created
Note that God in this scenario is just a universal character in our thought experiment, this is not supposed to be a religious quest for now (even though it may have to end as one).
Reality Zero –The One In Which Creation Is Created
The most theoretical and conceptual of the realities. Its existenceon this map stems from my search for an ultimate source of creation that goes beyond merely accepting the presence of a God as given.
PSIR questions whether there needs to be an institution on the other end of creation as a passive processand whether that concept is even feasible-after all, who created that one original creator?
Previous investigation of this problem within Reality 0 has lead to the idea of something emerging from nothingness, therefore organically creating itself – potentially led and influenced by other beings. Something in this context does not need to have RI-substance; it can also stand for an evolving idea or –like in this case –an artwork.
This is what I aim for PSIR to become:
self-creating
self-generating
self-re-creating
PSI Reality–The Transcendental Layer
PSI Phenomenon
A sub chapter of parapsychology describing extrasensory perception.
PSI phenomena include telepathy, telekinesis, reincarnation and precognition.
Though treated by some as a (medicinal) science, it has yet to be officially accepted as such. Instead it is usually put on a level with religious and esoteric theories.
PSI: Parasocial Interaction
The nature of mediated social interactions is thought to depend primarily upon two factors, the perceived authenticity and the perceived social distance from the other character. (5)
This means that in the right setting, Paracommunication (referring to communication with a fictional character or non-interactive, mediated processes towards real people) can occur accompanied by emotions and effects not different from any other kind of communication.
Widely used examples for Paracommunication include the 4th wall break and prayer.
The Birth of Reality PSI
Upon discovery of this lucky connection of letters, I immediately knew that I had found the perfect name for my project – not aiming for Reality Zero, but going beyond Reality I and exploring its borders with the n-realities.
The overlap between an at least partly conscious choice to interact with an unknown and possibly un-real, non-real, anti-real or in any way differently real entity, and the inexplicable, fantastic experiences and responses one might get is exactly where this part of my project is located.
Independent events and spin-offs of this project will henceforth be known as aPSIRd: a PSI-reality descendant.
IS THERE AN ANSWER?
(was there a question?)
Maybe.
Maybe not.
We will find out.
Or not.
